MLB Offseason Rundown: AL West

1. Anaheim Angels - The Angel's first priority, if they want to stay consistent, would be to sign Mark "Big Tex" Teixeira.  They will most likely be hard pressed by the Yankees and maybe Red Sox, but Anaheim does get the first chance to do it.  A lot of reports have the Angels targeting C.C. Sabathia, but it's not like they don't already have an above average rotation with John Lackey, Ervin Santana, Jered Weaver and Joe Saunders.  Though injured, they even have Kelvim Escobar at some point next season as well.  The Angels do lose Francisco Rodriguez and Darren Oliver in the bullpen which will probably hurt, they should look for veteran help there.  If they do not sign Teixeira, I like Pat Burrell or Milton Bradley signings, possibly even trading for Magglio Ordonez if Chicago makes him available.  Make no mistake, C.C. Sabathia would love to move to the L.A. area as that is where he is from and Jake Peavy also added the Angels to his list of trade suitors.

2. Oakland A's - The Athletics look like their only going to pay three players for seven digit salaries.  Thats right, only three players (Justin Duschsherer, Bobby Crosby, and Eric Chavez) are going to be paid more than a million for next season.  Even after trading Rich Harden, Chad Gaudin and Joe Blanton, the A's ended the season with the 4th ranked ERA.  Their rotation looks like Duchscherer, Greg Smith, Sean Gallagher, Dana Eveland and Gio Gonzalez.  If Oakland is willing to spend the same money as last season, they should have a good amount of spending money.  Kevin Kouzmanoff, Edwin Encarnacion, and Casey Blake are some names being thrown around the Athletic nation.

3. Texas Rangers - The Rangers are targeting some starting pitching in the offseason and they want an ace.  Face it, they really need an ace.  On talent alone, they don't have that bad of pitchers.  Brandon McCarthy has pitched well before, Kevin Millwood contended for the lowest ERA when he was with the Indians, Vicente Padilla can be an ace when he is healthy, and they have a good young kid in Matt Harrison.  The Rangers are expected to make a shot for C.C. Sabathia, but don't be surprised if Texas uses it's catcher surplus for a trade (Max Ramirez, Saltalamacchia, Taylor Teagarden and Gerald Laird).  I could see a Clay Buchholz, Zack Greinke, or Homer Bailey trade and a veteran signing like Freddy Garcia, mere speculation though on my part.  It will be interesting to see if the Rangers want to retain Milton Bradley for their offense.

4. Seattle Mariners - The Mariners have been big players in free agency in the past years, but I'm not too convinced they will be this off-season.  If your an optimist, you might see a good contract year for Bedard, King Felix pitches amazing, and Brandon Morrow is Ryan Dempster-like in his conversion to the rotation...but thats if your an optimist.  Mariners need some offense and I don't see a Manny Ramirez signing or even Pat Burrell, but they might take a shot at the likes of Adam Dunn or Bobby Abreu.  Unfortunately, they just re-signed the forever slumping Kenji Johjima, but this team just needs to keep flowing with it's young talent.  Jeff Clement, Brandon Morrow and Wladimir Balentien are all going to get a whole lot better.
