NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings – Week 13 – by Neil Kogut

After a busy week last week, I am back and as the College Football season winds down I will be here to give you some news and notes as usual.  This past weekend was a cakewalk for the top teams in the polls as Texas, Florida, Alabama and TCU waltzed to easy victories.  There was some last second heroics in the desert and some big mistakes in the deep south.  Stanford’s train ran off the tracks and that pesky Big XII North Division is finally settled.  Without much movement at the top…

1.    Texas (1)

2.   Alabama (2)

3.   Florida (3)

4.   TCU (4)

5.   Cincinnati (5)

6.   Boise State (6)

7.   Georgia Tech (7)

8.   Pittsburgh (8)

9.   Oregon (13)

10.  Ohio State (9)

11.  Iowa (13)

12.  Oklahoma State (14)

13.   Penn State (15)

14.   Virginia Tech (17)

15.   Clemson (18)

16.   Oregon State (20)

17.    BYU (19)

18.    California (NR)

19.    Stanford (10)

20.    North Carolina (22)

21.    Miami (23)

22.    Ole Miss (NR)

23.     LSU (12)

24.     Houston (24)

25.     USC (25)

- The Oregon-Arizona game was a classic semifinal for the Pac-10 championship.  Oregon showed true grit in hanging in their and getting the double OT victory.  Arizona also took a major step forward playing some inspired football and having the lead with a minute to go.  The one thing they need to fix is the boneheaded nature of their fans.  While it was very impressive to see the fans come out and be intense the entire game they really need to quit rushing the sideline with four minutes left in the game.  This is not the first time they have done this, just the first time they have done it and lost.  A message to Arizona fans: act like you have been there before (you haven’t) and keep your butts in the seats until the clock hits :00.

- It may seem strange but at this point I still have to leave Toby Gerhart as my top Heisman contender.  Yes they lost to Stanford and yes Mark Ingram had a great day, but he just didn’t get enough carries for me to move him in front of my previous frontrunner.  Sure, Ingram averaged 11 yards a carry and a touchdown every 5.5 carries, but when you only receive 11 carries its hard to help your case.  I do commend Alabama for not using him too heavily as what is most important is winning and they have the meat of their schedule coming up in the next three games.  Gerhart himself averaged over six yards per carry and had four touchdowns as the lone bright spot in a heart breaking loss for what was the hottest team in the nation.  I still think Ingram has a great chance to win the Heisman, but for now I have Gerhart by a yard.

- So long Charlie Weiss.  If it wasn’t a given before this Saturday that Weiss was going to lose his job, there is no way that he keeps it after the loss to Connecticut.  Early on in the season it seemed that Weis had finished the turnaround and Notre Dame was going to win at least eight games this season.  After yet another brutal loss, and a game looming at Stanford, it seems like seven wins is a pipe dream, and as he said when he took the job, 6-5 isn’t good enough.  So long Charlie, NEXT!

- As weird as it may sound I am actually nervous about Texas’ game this Thanksgiving Day at Kyle Field.  Rivalry games like this rarely turn out the way you expect and even after seeing Oklahoma blast Texas A&M two weeks ago, the Aggies do have enough firepower to score some points on the Horns.  They also hold a 2-1 record over Colt McCoy led Longhorn teams.  If Texas doesn’t come out firing from the beginning this game is going to be much closer than expected.  On a side note, I was disappointed that Kansas State couldn’t win the Big XII North.  If they would have won then McCoy would have had a chance, in the Big XII Championship, to defeat the only Big XII team he has never beaten.

If the season ended today, my Heisman ballot would read—

1.        Toby Gerhart
2.        Mark Ingram
3.        Colt McCoy
4.        Kellen Moore
5.        Golden Tate
