Page 1 of 5 With the NBA Finals beginning this week, I decided to compile a list of the 50 greatest moments in NBA Finals history. Please note that this list is subjective and simply my personal opinion of where I think the historical moments should be placed. So with further adieu, here are the 50 Greatest NBA Finals Moments:
50. 2003 Game 6 Spurs-88 Nets-77 Spurs center Tim Duncan scores 22 points, grabs 20 rebounds, dishes out 10 assists, and blocks eight shots as San Antonio goes on a 19-0 run in the fourth quarter to secure the Spurs’ second championship in five years. It was also the final game of David Robinson’s career, after 14 seasons with the Spurs.
49. 1984 Game 7 Celtics-111 Lakers-102 Led by Cedric Maxwell’s 24 points and Larry Bird’s 20 points to go along with his 12 rebounds, the Celtics defeated the Lakers in an epic seven-game series. The Lakers trailed by as many as 14 points to trim the lead to three with one minute remaining only to have Magic Johnson have the ball knocked away from Maxwell with a chance to tie the game. The win secured Boston’s 15th NBA championship, eighth over the Lakers 48. 1999 Game 5 Spurs-78 Knicks-77 Known as the “Little General” for his leadership, point guard Avery Johnson drills a baseline jumper with 47 seconds left to give the Spurs a 78-77 lead that they would hold on to for the franchise’s first NBA championship. 47. 1993 Game 3 Suns-129 Bulls-121 (3OT) After squandering a 11-point lead in the final 7:33 of regulation, the Suns go on a 9-0 run in the third overtime to win Game 3 and trim the Bulls’ series lead to 2-1. It is only the second game in NBA Finals history to go to three overtime periods, both featuring the Phoenix Suns and Paul Westphal, who was the Suns’ head coach for this triple overtime affair and a player in their triple overtime game with the Boston Celtics (see number 4). 46. 1970 Game 5 Knicks-107 Lakers-100 This was the game where Willis Reed injured his leg (see number two). Eight minutes into the first quarter, Reed tripped over the foot of Lakers center Wilt Chamberlain and falls to the ground, tearing a muscle in his right leg. Without Reed, the Knicks fell behind by as many as 16 points and trailed 82-75 at the start of the fourth quarter, but rallied for a 107-100 win to take a 3-2 series lead.
